THE barbecues were fired up at the Beachport Community Hall on Saturday for the quintessential post-vote “democracy sausage” enticing hundreds of voters.
Beachport was one of 195 locations across the state cooking up a storm for the election day tradition, with volunteers raising funds for the Beachport Primary School.
Volunteer Sam Uotila said the school had undertaken a democracy sausage sizzle at the federal election to much success.
“When we did it two years ago, we had people coming from everywhere to vote,” she said.
“It was a really good and easy way to raise money.
“It’s also a good way for people to have a chat after and make it a social event.”
Ms Uotila said more than 150 snags were sold before lunchtime and she expected to sell her whole batch of 300.
“We have been doing really well since being here at 7.30am,” she said.
“Everyone loves a sausage sizzle and it’s for a great cause.”
