Remembering the fallen

REMEMBRANCE: Mount Gambier Vietnam War veteran Winston Prowse at the Returned and Services League’s newly established “veterans wall”. The wall is situated at the RSL building in Sturt Street and honours those who served and are serving their country.

A VETERANS wall of remembrance has been established at the Mount Gambier Community Returned and Services League and will be formally dedicated on Anzac Day next month.

The wall is in the Digger’s Rest area at the rear of the RSL premises and forms part of the RSL sub-branch dedicated to veterans, their families and friends.

Mount Gambier RSL president Bob Sandow said the wall honoured the nation’s military personnel, merchant seamen
and members of philanthropic organisations such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army.

It also honours Commonwealth and allied veterans, as well as police, ambulance and emergency service members.

“The project is a unique opportunity for those interested – including friends, family members and relatives – to join in the Australian tradition of honouring those who have and are serving our country at home and abroad,” Mr Sandow said.

“Commemorations consist of a bronze plaque with individual engraving placed on the wall in honour of a specific individual.

“The RSL will maintain the plaques and wall.”

Mr Sandow said plaques can be obtained for a donation of $80 as part of the RSL’s fundraising efforts.

In addition, a poppy can be placed at plagues on remembrance days for a gold coin donation.
