SINCE 2003, the Limestone Coast Relay For Life has raised a staggering ongoing total of over $1m in donations to help fund Cancer Council SA’s research, prevention and support services.
Relay participants take on the challenge of keeping their team’s baton – and symbol of hope – moving around the track for 19 hours.
The two-day event gives participants the opportunity to celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, those who care for people with cancer and the memory of those who have lost their battles.
With this year’s relay fast approaching, event coordinator Maxine Tuffnell has urged locals to start or join a team.
“It’s not too late to register and the funds raised will support Greenhill Lodge in Adelaide, which provides accommodation for country patients,” Ms Tuffnell said.
“Seven or eight families from the Limestone Coast stay at the lodge at any one time – an average of 1000 nights per year.
“We have 17 teams signed up this year compared with 43 at the last local relay in 2016.”
Ms Tuffnell said the 2018 relay would likely be the last in the Limestone Coast.
“Locally this will possibly be the last relay and we would like to go out with a bang,” she said.
“We have an afternoon tea for survivors and carers after the opening ceremony and completion of the first lap and we encourage them to attend.
“The candlelight ceremony will be held at dusk and everyone is welcome – even if you’re not involved in the relay, we welcome everyone to join us for that.”
The Limestone Coast Relay for Life will be held March 24 and 25 and will feature live music, treasure hunts, entertainment and a free breakfast.
