Big music bid

READY TO ROCK: Local girls Madi Turner and Ellie Leopold have applied for Millicent to host one of the biggest charity concerts of the year – Triple J’s One Night Stand.

TRIPLE J’s One Night Stand – one of the biggest charity music concerts on the national calendar – could be on its way to Millicent later this year if an application by local teenagers is successful.

Former Millicent High School students Madi Turner and Ellie Leopold – both aged 18 – have started the application process for Millicent to be considered a venue for the event, which aims to bring the best of Australian music to regional areas.

If successful, thousands of music lovers from across the country would converge on the town, creating an influx of business opportunities.

“Hosting an event like the One Night Stand would bring publicity to Millicent and put our regional town on the map,” Ms Turner said.

“People often underestimate our location,” Ms Leopold added.

“We are half an hour from the wineries, Mount Gambier and we are close to beaches.”

All funds raised at the charity event are donated to a local organisation of choice.

The duo chose Mount Gambier’s mental health clinic Headspace, which provides a confidential and youth friendly health service for young people aged between 12 and 25.

“We chose Headspace because living in a rural area we are often overlooked when it comes to mental health and people struggle to get the support they need,” Ms Leopold said.

A Facebook page “Triple J One Night Stand Millicent” has been created to get the word out and has already received overwhelming and positive support with almost 600 likes and more than 300 shares.

With approval and support from Wattle Range Council and the Millicent Business Community Association, the girls wanted to use social media as a platform to reach out to the community and allow locals to have an input in the
application.

They have also planned to make a promotional video, which will showcase the Limestone Coast and hopefully catch the eye of event organisers.

Triple J’s One Night Stand is held in September and is typically headlined by a number of Australia’s biggest artists.
The 2018 line-up and location is set to be released in May.
