Rods ready to rumble

CLASSIC: Western Australia’s Mark Craine is set to bring his white 1931 Ford Coupe, running a supercharged small block Chevrolet engine, to the Australian Street Rod Federation Street Rod Nationals gathering in the city next month.

A HUGE collection of hot rods and custom cars is set to arrive in Mount Gambier next month for car enthusiasts to enjoy.

The Australian Street Rod Federation Street Rod Nationals gathering will be held at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds from March 24 to 25, with standout vehicles from across Australia bound for the event.

Spectators will be able to get up close to the fascinating cars and their owners for most of the day at the show and shine event.

In addition, a collection of special interest vehicles, muscle cars, performance and racing cars, along with street machines, will be on show in a separate car park.

Anyone with a special interest vehicle, be it a street machine, bike, competition vehicle, restored or classic will be able to access the special interest vehicle display via Pick Avenue from 9am to 4pm on both days.

A $5 park fee for these vehicles includes a free event program booklet.

Event activities will include hot rod motor events, trade exhibitor stands with a range of stylish and retro clothing, with accessories and other automotive interests on show and sale.

There will be music, rock and roll bands, along with other entertainment, with food and variety stalls, including a cruise track inside the showgrounds for spectators to observe entrants cruising and displaying their vehicles.

Entrants will travel from across Australia, including Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and Northern Territory along with a strong contingent of vehicles from throughout South Australia and Victoria.

Mark Craine from Western Australia is set to bring his 1931 Ford Coupe with a supercharged Chevrolet engine.

Among the variety of cars from Adelaide is sponsor and entrant Geoff Woods with his supercharged V8 1932 Ford five-window Coupe.

All cars will be chasing a top 10 award of excellence for the event, voted by entrants.

Event manager Trevor Cass said preparation for the event by the organising committee was a two year process.

“When have locals been able to see an amazing array of hot rods, rat rods and customs up close in the Mount Gambier region?” Mr Cass said.

“Countless hours have gone into the construction of these beautifully detailed, chrome plated and polished vehicles, many featuring late model running gear and state of the art automotive engineering and technology.”

He said street rods spectators will have the opportunity to talk with owners, builders and component suppliers.
