Greens announce Makillop candidate

ADELAIDE Hills resident Donella Peters will contest the seat of MacKillop for the second consecutive time as the Greens SA candidate.

Ms Peters and recently announced Labor candidate Hilary Wigg will join Nick McBride (Liberal), Tracy Hill (SA-Best), Richard Bateman (Australian Conservatives) and Jon Ey (independent) in the battle for the blue-ribbon seat.

In the 2014 election, Ms Peters ran in the seat of MacKillop against outgoing MP Mitch Williams and gained a 2.3pc swing towards the party after claiming 5.7pc of the primary vote.

The repeat candidate contested the seat of Mount Gambier in 2010 against independent Don Pegler and Liberal Steve Perryman, gaining a primary vote of 2.3pc.

Ms Peters, who lives in the state electorate of Heysen, said she was proud to be standing in the seat of MacKillop.

She added she joined the party out of a deep concern for the environment.

“The environment is the air we breathe, our clean water, and the soil which grows our food,” she said.

“If we do not protect these, we have no future.”

“Protecting the environment is not just about protecting birds and animals, plants and fish.

“The Greens also put the needs of ordinary people ahead of the demands of big business.

“Neo-liberal economics is not working: the trickle-down economy does not, and too many people are finding it difficult to make ends meet.”
