THE Port MacDonnell Golf Club held a selection of events over the weekend as part of its summer tournament and women’s open day, with each of the competitions hotly contested.
Friday twilight
A SMALL field turned out Friday night for the nine-hole stroke event with Joel Feast winning the men’s competition with a nett score of 30 from Craig Perryman on nett 31.
For the women it was Judy Jennings with a nett 36 who bested Sheryl Johnson’s nett 37, while Johnson took out the nearest-the-pin.
Saturday men
BEN Wilson claimed the day’s honours in Saturday’s 18-hole stableford event, with a score of 41 points seeing him ahead of Bryon Coe on 37.
Wilson also won the best front nine with a solid 23 points and was awarded the Port MacDonnell Anniversary Perpetual Trophy for best score of the day.
Mark Carrison (0-18) won the handicap long drive, while Steven Coe (19-36) had the longest drive on the day.
In the juniors, Callum Harvey won the day with 29 points, along with also taking out the long drive competition.
Saturday women’s open
SATURDAY’s women’s open event saw a god turn out with players from Port MacDonnell, Blue Lake, Dartmoor, Millicent, Penola and Mount Gambier.
On the day the A Grade winner was Di Norman with a score of 39 points, followed by Dianne Perryman with 35.
Norman also had the best front nine score with 20 points, along with the nearest-the-pin for the day.
Kerry Pedlar had the longest drive.
In the B Grade competition, Mary Kentish claimed the win with 39 points from Beryl Mahoney on 38.
Kentish had the best front nine score with 21 points, while Mandy Coe took out the longest drive and Mahoney secured the nearest-the-pin.
The veterans competition was also won by Kentish, on a countback from Norman.
Kentish had a good day out, taking home the Sylvia Humphries award for best score of the day with 39 points on a countback from Norman.
Sunday men’s open
ON Sunday the men’s open was played, with Bill Burley having a good day to take out the men’s A Grade Scratch 27-hole event, along with scoring an eagle on the 17th.
Burley earned his win after a playoff with Matt Anderson, as both players finished on gross scores of 116.
The men’s A Grade handicap event was won by Ron Oakley on a score of 104 and he was followed by Ross Murray in second after a countback from Darren Pevitt with 108.
Burley also won the A Grade nearest-the-pin and longest drive competition in a standout performance.
In B Grade, the 27-hole stroke event saw Craig Perryman win the day with a score of 126 over Terry Janeway with 129 on a countback from Jason Knight.
With players only receiving one major prize each, this saw Knight with the handicap event win with a score of 106 over Ken Hickman with 107.
Perryman won nearest-the-pin, while Knight took out the longest drive for B Grade.
The C Grade 18-hole event was won by Geoff Bond with a score of 98 over Bryon Coe with 99, while Steven Coe won the handicap event with 77, ahead of Peter Richards on 78.
Paul Hickman won the nearest-the-pin, while Geoff Bond took out the C Grade long drive competition.
In the veterans class, the 18-hole stroke event was won by Terry Janeway on a countback from Bryon Coe, both on 72.
The inaugural Murray Humphries Memorial Trophy for best nett score of the day went to Perryman with his score of 65.

Coming events
THIS Friday will be a nine-hole stableford event with tee off from 4pm, while an 18-hole par event will be held on Sunday.
February 18 also sees the club hold its first poker tournament, while on February 25 club championships will begin for all grades, men and women.
A sponsors day will be held on March 4 for all financial sponsors.
Battle of the Boats will be held on March 24 and the Thomson Shield has been changed to April 8 at Dartmoor.
