Community appeal brightens Christmas

CHRISTMAS CHEER: Mayor Andrew Lee and ac.care homelessness services manager Trish Spark prepare to deliver 270 Christmas hampers to local families in need as part of the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

AS CHRISTMAS Day nears, Mayor Andrew Lee has appealed to the community to dig deep and support the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

The cause provides assistance to more than 2300 local people each year.

Uniting Care, ac.care, Lifeline SE, St Vincent de Paul and The Salvation Army jointly distribute all donations to the appeal through the Christmas Cheer program.

“It’s never too late to offer your support to the community, all donations will go towards helping the needy within our community now and in the future and every little bit helps,” Mr Lee said.

ac.care homelessness services manager Trish Spark said the team was preparing to deliver 270 Christmas hampers and gifts to local families and individuals in need today.

“More families have required our help this year, due in part to the high cost of utility bills and the rising cost of living in general,” Ms Spark said.

“People are extremely grateful for the help and some become quite overwhelmed when they receive their hamper.

“The boxes are full of festive food, fruit, vegetables and bread – a lot of kids wouldn’t have presents or a special meal on Christmas day if it wasn’t for these hampers and goods.”

Mr Lee acknowledged the ongoing generosity of the community and praised the support and kindness shown by all who contribute to the appeal.

“Demand for help is greater than ever and we truly appreciate your support and thoughts for the less fortunate, vulnerable or isolated members of the local community during the festive season,” he said.

Donations to the appeal can be made via credit card, direct debit or PayPal at www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/christmasappeal and in person at the Mount Gambier Civic Centre or by cheque marked
