Women empowered at luncheon

THE Riverland Division of General Practice held its inaugural Women of Worth lunch at 5290 last Thursday to empower local women living with anxiety and depression.

Attended by around 12 women, RDGP counsellor Linda Galley said regular Women of Worth events would likely continue.

“I see a lot of women come through RDGP who are full of anxiety and depression and do not have the capacity to leave their house because of those limitations,” Ms Galley explained.

“They cannot go out without having panic attacks, so this lunch was basically to encourage them to get out.

“Many of the women said even though they were anxious to attend they came anyway because they knew it would be a safe environment – that was so nice to hear.”

Guest speakers at the luncheon included Karen women who shared their stories and a local yoga teacher who provided the group with relaxation techniques.

“A few Karen women shared their journey and there was not a dry eye in the room – we were all crying,” Ms Galley said.

“A local yoga teacher came to give the group techniques to help them sleep and relax.

“It has been a very beneficial day for everyone who attended.”

Ms Galley said the vision for Women of Worth was to formulate friendships.

“We are hoping to have another catch-up in February – a little reunion after Christmas,” she said.

“We hope to branch out from there and connect women who might be going through the same things.”
