Illegal campers face hefty on the spot fines

ILLEGAL campers at the Robe Oval and golf course during the coming New Year’s celebrations will face an on the spot fine of $187.50.

A ban on camping will be enforced due to the amount of smashed glass and damage to facilities almost a year ago.

The tough stance has been adopted by the Robe District Council in consultation with police.

Council chief executive Roger Sweetman has stated why the fines were necessary.

“So the substantial damage to the oval and facilities during the previous New Year’s Eve holiday does not occur again, council in cooperation with the police will enforce no camping in this area on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the New Year’s Eve holiday weekend,” Mr Sweetman said.

“Campers will be advised to move to other locations and those who fail to adhere to directions given to them will be issued with an expiation notice for $187.50.

“Council is seeking the cooperation of the many visitors to our town over this period to ensure there are no problems.”

Meanwhile, all public areas will again be “dry” (alcohol-free) during the peak festive season when 20,000 holidaymakers descend on Robe.

Alcohol cannot be consumed in a public place between 9pm on Friday December 29 until noon on Monday January 1.

Mr Sweetman said the introduction of the dry zone has greatly assisted with the management of antisocial behaviour and enables Robe to be enjoyed by everyone during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Millicent Police officer in charge Senior Sergeant First Class Peter Brown said police had been in discussions with the council and supported the initiatives.

“Due to the timing of New Year’s Eve on a Sunday night, we anticipate a large influx of people for the whole weekend,” he said.

“It should also be pointed out the Robe Oval area must be kept clear.

“It is the designated helicopter landing point in the event of an emergency.”
