Advocacy for older Barker residents

MEMBER for Barker Tony Pasin has announced a free support network is now available to stand up for the rights of older people in need in Barker.

“The government understands that, from time to time, older people, their families and carers need help to navigate their legal and aged care rights,” Mr Pasin said.

“The new Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) will be of great benefit to our senior residents by giving them a strong voice.”

The new service can be accessed online or via a free call number.

“Barker residents will be automatically connected with our local South Australian advocacy organisation,” Mr Pasin said.

“Trained advocates then assess their needs and can provide personalised service and meet with them if necessary to help them make informed decisions about their future.”

Mr Pasin said OPAN help was available to all Barker residents aged 55 and over, including those who may be living with a disability or dementia, or those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

OPAN will support consumers and their families and representatives to effectively access and interact with Commonwealth-funded aged care services, including residential aged care, home care packages and Commonwealth-funded dementia services.

The Federal Government has provided $25.7m over the next three years for OPAN to deliver the new National Aged Care Advocacy Program.

Older Barker residents, their families or carers in need of advocacy can visit www.opan.com.au or call 1800 700 600.
