MOUNT Gambier City Council development assessors will pore over a multi-million dollar application for a second McDonald’s store in the Blue Lake city.
Council has now released plans for the non-complying category three development for public comment.
The fast food giant has proposed building a new store on Attamurra Road on the eastern fringe of Mount Gambier.
McDonald’s has mooted spending around $6m on the project, which is likely to create 100 ongoing jobs and trigger a construction boom.
The blueprint includes the construction of the shop, associated carparking and signage, as well as landscaping, at 30 Attamurra Road at Worrolong,
Developer Bryce Crick – who operates the existing McDonald’s stores in Mount Gambier, Portland and Naracoorte – said the new store was a significant investment in the city’s economy.
“I would love to bring a new restaurant to Attamurra,” Mr Crick told The Border Watch.
“Not only is it a great opportunity to bring the latest McDonald’s offering to the Mount Gambier community, it also gives me a chance to bring more training and employment opportunities.”
The McDonald’s licensee foreshadowed the new store would be primarily built by local South Australian contractors.
He revealed the new restaurant would underpin full-time, part-time and casual jobs, including crew members, McCafe baristas and management positions.
Based on the latest “Macca’s” design, the new restaurant will feature a “play place” for children to enjoy, a McCafe, which will provide barista-made coffee and a drive-through.
The new store will also be equipped with the latest McDonald’s technology, such as charging stations, self-serve kiosks and free customer Wi-Fi.
Mr Crick has flagged the need to build another store to relieve traffic congestion at the current inner city site and service the city’s residential growth corridor.
He said the existing stores already make McDonald’s the largest regional owned and operated business outside of the Scott Group of Companies.
Attamurra Road borders the sprawling Conroe Heights residential area and is also home to the popular Dimjalla Skatepark.
McDonald’s aim to have the restaurant open and trading for Christmas in 2018.
Public submissions close on Monday.
