Drink drivers nabbed

A THREE hour statewide blitz to catch people drink or drug driving by police on Friday has only seen one driver caught in the Limestone Coast region.

Despite 558 blood alcohol tests and four drug tests, Limestone Coast Police revealed the pleasing statistic that only one person was caught drink driving during “Operation Stop Drink/Drug Driving”.

Across the state, a total of 3789 drivers were breath tested and another 146 drug tested.

Two drivers returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of .023 and one provisional driver returned an alleged reading of .052.

Superintendent Anthony Fioravanti, officer in charge of Traffic Support Branch, said most drivers do the right thing, but there is still a significant number who continue to drink or drug drive and endanger everyone else.

“Driving over the limit, or taking drugs and driving creates an unacceptable risk to every other road user,” Supt Fioravanti said.

“Drink and drug driving has long been recognised as a major contributing factor to road crashes.”

During the operation, police also issued 34 expiation notices, five cautions, two cannabis expiation notices and reported eight drivers for driving while disqualified.

“Police will continue to detect these drivers and take them off the roads whenever we can, before they kill an innocent person,” Mr Fioravanti said.

“Operation Stop Drink/Drug driving is one of our many special focus operations, but I remind all drivers that police can breath test and drug test any driver or motorcycle rider at any time of the day or night, anywhere in the state.”
