THE $1.2m construction of landfill Cell 3B at Caroline Landfill was completed last month at an opportune time as Cell 3A reached critical capacity.
Mount Gambier City Council received the first truckload of waste into Cell 3B on June 25.
Cell 3B will now accept all waste going to landfill for the next three to five years, depending on volumes of incoming waste.
When it reaches capacity council will move into Cell 3C.
As part of a long term waste management capital construction program, council has foreshadowed expenditure between $700,000 and $1m per year on either new cell construction or capping of old cells that reach capacity.
