Convincing victories in top tennis grade

THE third week of Mount Gambier and District senior tennis kicked off over the weekend, with the A1 competition opening the round at Olympic Park on Friday night.

On the night Reidy Park asserted its dominance over West Gambier with a five-set win, while Glencoe claimed a six-set victory as it faced Uniting Church.

The remaining grades contested Round 3 on Saturday afternoon, with the women’s doubles clash between Uniting Church and Glencoe Maroon was a nail-biter.

Finishing on three sets a piece, it was Glencoe which secured the honours by just one game.

Of the six matches played, three went to tiebreak, two of which were in Uniting Church’s favour.

In the end it was Glencoe’s Angela Hann and Luisa Dohnt who won the day for their side, with their 4-6 win over Anne Goetze and Frances Quirk enough to counteract the tiebreaks and secure the game tally required to win.

Glencoe’s Janine Amoroso and Teresa Anderson also had a good win against Shirley Hogg and Vivienne Wilson, with the final result 6-1 in their favour.

However, this solid result was answered by Uniting Church’s Shirley Hogg and Frances Quirk as they claimed a 6-1 win over Janine Amoroso and Luisa Dohnt.

In other games, West Gambier hosted Mil Lel and suffered a four-set defeat at the hands of its guest.

With the final score seeing Mil Lel with five sets and 36 games, West could not compete as it was only able to hit the scoreboard in one match.

This game saw West’s Zena Reiner and Jessica Stutley defeat Fiona Harten and Jacinta Clark 7-6, but Mil Lel claimed 6-0 victories in the other matches which sealed the deal for the side.

It was a similar scenario for Saints United when it faced off against Glencoe Gold.

The Saints won all but one of their matches, which saw Glencoe’s Cassie Edwards and Shana Morgan narrowly defeat Tasja Barelds and Maureen Scanlon 7-5.

However, the single win was not enough to save Glencoe from suffering a loss for Round 3.
