RESIDENTS at Boandik St Mary’s aged care facility presented a generous $300 donation to the South East Animal Welfare League this week.
The donation was made possible by residents baking and selling goods throughout August to raise funds.
St Mary’s lifestyle coordinator Cindy Crozier said the fundraising initiative was inspired by the annual RSPCA Cupcake Day.
“The RSPCA has the cupcake day fundraiser in August every year where the concept is decorating and selling cupcakes,” she said.
“I thought, along with our residential manager Jo Jenner, it would be a good idea to support our local animal welfare organisation instead.
“Not many people know the animal welfare league is not funded by the government, whereas the RSPCA is, so we figured every donation to the league helps.”
Residents baked every Monday and Friday during August and sold the lovingly-made treats to family and friends, with all proceeds donated to the SEAWL.
“We had fun doing it, we usually cook every Monday as a rule, but in August we cook twice a week,” Ms Crozier said.
“We try to support the SEAWL as often as we can – we sell the league’s calendars at Christmas time and if we ever have an influx of blankets we take them out there as well.”
SEAWL committee treasurer Natalie Zwar thanked Boandik St Mary’s residents for their generosity.
The donation will contribute to ongoing running costs at the league’s Riddoch Highway facility.
