Old time country hall eyes modern makeover

THE construction of accessible toilets and a long-overdue bathroom upgrade at Mil Lel Memorial Hall could become a reality if a bid for funding through the State Government’s Fund My Neighbourhood scheme is successful.

Between old time dances, community group meetings and school plays, activity at the hall is still impressively frequent, however the toilets and bathroom are only accessible via stairs which limits viability for larger events.

Mil Lel Show Society committee member Lucy Innes said plans had previously been drawn to expand and overhaul the bathroom – the first upgrade at the community hall in at least four decades.

“The upgrade and expansion has been on the agenda for some time and a lot of the background work had already been completed before we nominated the project for the Fund My Neighbourhood scheme,” Ms Innes said.

“The construction of accessible toilets will allow more opportunities for the broader community to use the hall.

“We hope it might be an attractive venue for larger events during the Generations in Jazz festival, as an example.

“The last upgrade was the kitchen expansion in the late ’60s or early ’70s, but the hall is otherwise very well maintained – this bathroom upgrade will really improve its economic viability.”
