THE city’s business leaders discussed strategies to celebrate and further develop the role of arts, culture and heritage at the monthly Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting at the Quality Inn Presidential on Wednesday.
Mount Gambier City Council community wellbeing general manager Barb Cernovskis explained the aspirations of council’s Cultural and Heritage plan, before attendees participated in round table discussion to promote their ideas.
Ms Cernovskis said the meeting was an opportunity to engage business leaders in an important conversation about culture and its role in defining the city.
“We held the first of several community brainstorming sessions with artists and cultural champions in May and we will continue the consultation process as we develop a finalised plan,” Ms Cernovskis said.
“Today we will ask attendees to consider the things about life in Mount Gambier that we should celebrate, the creative life they want for Mount Gambier and what we need to preserve and retain.
“Investing in arts is important for the local economy, promotes civic pride, community connectedness, social inclusion, wellbeing and improved mental health outcomes.”
Chamber president Lynette Martin welcomed the development of the Cultural and Heritage plan and applauded city council for its innovative approach.
“Council is often criticised for its investment in arts and culture but I believe council should be commended for turning this city into a vibrant regional centre,” Ms Martin said.
“Mount Gambier is certainly more vibrant than it was a few years ago and that is through council’s innovative planning.
“The Cultural and Heritage plan will drive tourism, boost economic growth, improve the community lifestyle and experiences for residents and visitors.”
Council has invited the broader community to be part of the ongoing discussion.
