A TARPEENA woman remains in a serious but stable condition after the car she was driving rolled and crashed into a tree on the Riddoch Highway on Friday evening.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene near Wandilo at around 6.20pm after reports of a car hitting a tree, leaving a woman trapped.

The accident occurred just north of the Mount Gambier Airport and left the sole occupant of the vehicle pinned to her seat by the steering wheel.

Wandilo Country Fire Service, Mount Gambier State Emergency Service and paramedics worked tirelessly to free the 22-year-old woman.

SA Ambulance Service Limestone Coast regional operations manager Andrew Thomas said paramedics were supported by an intensive care unit crew at the scene.

“Emergency crews worked to free the woman while acting paramedics started their treatment,” Mr Thomas said.

Once freed, the woman was taken to Mount Gambier Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“After extrication, she was transported to Mount Gambier Hospital under emergency conditions and staff at the hospital were notified of her critical condition,” Mr Thomas said.

“She had quite serious head and chest injuries as a result of the accident.”

Mount Gambier Police officer in charge Sergeant Stephen Lawrie confirmed the woman had been transferred to Royal Adelaide Hospital for further treatment.

“It was a very bad accident and the woman was transferred to Adelaide in a serious condition over the weekend,” Sgt Lawrie said.

“An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to report details online at www.crimestoppers.com.au or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
