Chainsaw incident leads to police investigation

MOUNT Gambier Police are investigating an incident in which a man allegedly used a chainsaw to threaten another man after being involved in a minor collision in the city’s Coles car park last Tuesday night.

Police were called to the scene on James Street at around 8pm after reports of a minor crash between two vehicles.

A man driving one of the cars allegedly threatened the other driver with a chainsaw before driving away in a white Ford Falcon station wagon with Victorian registration PIE555.

Mount Gambier Police acting officer in charge Sergeant Stephen Lawrie said the chainsaw was only presented as an apparent attempt of intimidation.

“We are not alleging that there was any sort of Texas Chainsaw Massacre incident going on here,” Sgt Lawrie said.

“The chainsaw was never turned on by the man and no-one was injured during the altercation.”

Sgt Lawrie said police attended the scene, however the man had fled in his vehicle before they arrived.

The suspect is described as being of Caucasian appearance, around 170cm tall of medium build, with short brown and blonde hair and was wearing a white shirt and brown shorts.

“We are hoping the public can help us identify the man involved and are waiting on some more information regarding the incident,” Sgt Lawrie said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or sees the car is asked to call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

Coles was contacted by The Border Watch, but declined to comment on the incident.
