THE South Australian Country Fire Service is warning residents not to be complacent, with fire crews being called to several escaped burn-offs in the past week.
State duty commander Nik Stanley said warm, windy weather over recent days resulted in several unattended burn-offs escaping or rekindling across the state, including one near Millicent.
“Although it is good to see people cleaning up their properties ahead of the fire danger season, we are seeing an increased number of vegetation pile burns spreading,” Mr Stanley said.
“Vegetation dries out quickly at this time of year and although some fuels look green, they are still able to burn.
“People need to ensure they have cleared a four metre break of all flammable material around the fire and have sufficient water supply on hand to extinguish the fire should it spread.
“The fire should be monitored for a 24 to 48 hour period following the burn to ensure it has not escaped and is completely extinguished.”
The warning comes as fire danger season dates are announced.
The season for the Upper South East will run from November 15 to April 15, with the Lower South East starting a week later on November 22 and continuing until April 30.
