Kelpie centre breaks ground

THE construction of the Casterton Australian Kelpie Centre will be officially launched by Member for Wannon Dan Tehan Friday.

Valued at $1.5m, the centre will be built by local building firm Nicholson Construction in readiness for the 2018 Australian Kelpie Muster on the June long weekend.

Situated in the heart of the Kelpie Trail in the town’s central business district, the building will include a visitor information centre, meeting spaces and amenities with an interpretative display showcasing the story of the working dog.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Anita Rank said the council was grateful for the Federal Government’s grant of $658,000, which ensured the project became a reality.

“We are looking forward to hosting Mr Tehan as we celebrate the start of construction on this important project which will change the tourism landscape in the town,” she said.

“This kelpie centre design has been created after almost 12 months of consultation with the local community, taking into consideration their ideas and concepts to create a state of the art interpretative space which meets all expectations.

“Casterton’s story as the birthplace of the kelpie is iconic – this centre will showcase the story in a purpose-built facility in a modern and accessible space which will open the door to a new visitor economy in the town.

“Tourists, particularly the international market, have a great appetite for these rich pastoral heritage stories.

“The new centre will assist in further building and strengthening our profile as a key destination on the Melbourne to Adelaide touring route, and connections to the Great Ocean Road and Grampians tourist regions.”

Construction of the new centre, which was designed by Morton Dunn architects, is expected to create 10 local jobs and stimulate greater visitation to the town’s retail precinct.
