IT WAS a day full of fun activities and diverse food for South East families as they enjoyed the 79th annual Mil Lel Show on Saturday.

Packed with people of all ages, children sung and danced along to new guest George the Farmer while adults stocked up on lemon meringue tarts and enjoyed waffles and a barbecue lunch.

Although a rain did send some visitors home a little earlier than usual, show committee treasurer Liza Kirby said they did see an increase in people through the gates over the day.

“We are very happy with how the day went, we have received a lot great feedback from those who attended despite the shower of rain in the afternoon,” she said.

“There were definitely more young families which was really good to see and the kids loved seeing George the Farmer.”

Lining the benches with macaroons, cupcakes and tarts, the tea rooms were the place to be when lunch came around with a constant line of people waiting the savour the treats on offer.

“The Pleasant Park CWA ladies were very busy over lunch time selling homemade pasties, sausage rolls, sandwiches and sweet treats – they were very happy with the turnout,” Ms Kirby said.

As well as usual fun activities for kids such as the jumping castle, animal nursery and face painting, the bungee run, pony classes and steam engine display proved to be big hits.

“The Mil Lel Steam Engine and Machinery Association had a great display of engines and tractors for people of all ages to enjoy,” Ms Kirby said.

“They also had a display on the Sunday so it was a very busy weekend.

“Overall it was a fantastic day and a great success.”

The event marks the start of the region’s spring show season, with the biggest event – the Mount Gambier Spring Show – to be held on October 20 and 21.
