Netballers support cancer group

A TEAM EFFORT: Mount Gambier Netball Association president Paul Gibbs and Saints Netball Club president Sam Primmer present a cheque to Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group representative Malcolm Porter.

MOUNT Gambier’s Saints Netball Club – together with the Mount Gambier Netball Association – has netted a windfall for a regional cancer support group.

The proactive community-based sporting club held a fundraising event during the netball season to raise awareness of prostate cancer and funds.

Netballers donned blue on their uniforms and money was raised via a donation tin at the gates.

Club members also sold picnic boxes, cupcakes, cheese tarts and blue ribbon on the day.

This is the third year the fund-raiser has been held that initially started when Saints president Sam Primmer’s husband BJ was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014.

BJ – who underwent surgery and radiotherapy treatment in Adelaide – was fortunate to have the support of many services during his three-month stint in Adelaide.

This led to the club – with the support of the association – deciding to help raise awareness of prostate cancer, men’s health and the services of Cancer Council SA, particularly Greenhill Lodge.

Both the Limestone Coast Prostate Support Group and Cancer Council SA have received generous donations from the initiative.
