EXTERNAL renovations at Mount Gambier’s civic centre are nearing completion, with the face of Sir Robert Helpmann now casting a watchful eye over the city.
The $1.3m refurbishment, a joint project between Mount Gambier City Council and Country Arts SA, has seen zinc panels installed on a steel and plywood frame to cover the building’s deteriorating tiles.
A silhouette of the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre’s namesake has emerged on the south western face of the 30m fly tower.
City Council regulatory services manager Michael Silvy said the installation of the mosaic zinc panels was around 70pc completed.
“We expect the fly tower will be finished early next week,” Mr Silvy said.
“They will start taking down the scaffolding and filling in the sections where the scaffolding was attached to the building.
“After the fly tower is completed the team will move on to the lower area over the auditorium.”
Mr Silvy said he anticipated the project would be entirely completed by early October.
